Abstract; The iodination kinetics of acetone was studied by visible spectrophotometry in order to compare with the results obtained by the reaction rate measurement system with CCD camera and computer for chemical education. The iodination of acetone proceeds by the addition of hydrochloric acid and I3- ion to acetone. The reaction rates at temperatures of 15.DEG.C. to 40.DEG.C. were measured by the change of I3- ion concentration with time, where the concentration of I3- ion was determined from the absorbance at 353nm. The rate-determining step of this reaction was enolization of acetone, followed by iodination of the enol. The iodination of acetone is first-order with respect to acetone and hydronium ion, and zeroth-order to I3- ion. The rate constant of the enolization was kenol=2.3*10-5M-1 s-1 at 25.DEG.C.. The activation energy of this reaction was estimated to be Ea=68.2kJ mol-1 from the plot of log(kenol/M-1 s-1) vs. 1/T. The kinetic parameters of the reaction were also calculated from the rate constant at 25.DEG.C. and the activation energy: .DELTA.G.D.DAGGER.=99.7kJ mol-1, .DELTA.H.D.DAGGER.=65.7kJ mol-1 and .DELTA.S.D.DAGGER.=114J K-1 mol-1.
